Father Pfleger: Tact is for Suckas
I especially want to hear from you ministers and community leaders on this one.
By now you've seen it. If not, here it is. Most will agree with Father Michael Pfleger, and no one will disagree that he is a prophetic figure in our country (he's an angel in Chicago, trust, he'll NEVER lose St. Sabina). But MORE THAN THAT, how do these comments help or harm Obama's campaign? I'll save my thoughts until a couple of you respond, but I know that after 8 years of Bush, nobody (black or white) even wants the IMPRESSION that our next president will be surrounded and advised by...um...charismatic types. I love them dearly and view them as my mentors in good ministry and community leadership, but I know America.
Are they scaring the majority away? What should Obama do? I think this is ESPECIALLY interesting considering that most of the folks who tune in to PureMusic everyday are ministers and folks who think that Wright and Pfleger are the bee's knees. I know I do.
I really want Obama to beat McCain.

its an odd position /c I KNOW the press club thing was intentional and it worked to perfection. Alas, I don't know on this one. Pfleger is so political savvy and to do it at TRINITY of all places baffles me. I want to chalk it up to old people once again forgetting that the cameras are not only ALWAYS rolling but will be on repeat...In addition, this was unnecessary, intentional or not...
He did come with that apology though
I've always admired and respected Rev. Pfleger for his work in the 'hood and inside his church, especially since he's a white man and has boldly gone against traditions of the Catholic Church that haven't made the best impression on the African-American community as a whole.
So I'm shocked and upset at Rev. Pfleger's recent actions and quite concerned that it could hurt Obama's chances. Yeah, Pfleger was trying to point out that we still live in an unjust, racist society and that many white people still think that they are supposed to always have the upperhand, including many white politicians. However, I disagreed with the way Phleger did it, the timing of it, and of course, the fact that he said those words at Trinity.
And I'm not sure if he offered a sincere apology. The fact that he shouted his beliefs about Clinton (who I don't particularly care for, but feels she deserves some respect, especially from a Christian such as Phleger), his sermon spoke much louder than his apology.
So I think Phleger's actions are a bad witness for other Christians trying to reach unsaved individuals, who often think we're unloving and hypocritical. And that sermon could, indeed, scare away white voters who want to trust Barack Obama.
ehh... its cool with me...people are too sensitive..(i.e., rachel ray dunkin donuts...google it)
Antonio's words are almost exactly like my sentiments. I'm concerned about the Obama vote, but I'm more concerned about the Christian witness. What message does this send to folks young in the faith who want to do right? That we can say whatever we want as long as it's charismatically done? What message does this send to other faiths who closely view our own? There's a dangerous arrogance in these words...
I would prefer things like this come out during the campaign process as opposed to during the presidency. When Obama wins we want to be assured that America knows they are getting the WHOLE man and not just the parts they want to see. His advisors, pastors present and past, are all apart of Obama the WHOLE. He has to continue to play his position as I am not the one stating these things, but these are people who I have looked to for guidance before. This is what many pastors talk about in black churches, it's no secret it's just that America never cared to listen to it before. Opinion is opinion, not fact or false - just opinion. As a Black Catholic I often look to Pfleger as a Priest who is in tune with urban Chicago, urban America. He felt this on his heart and needed to articulate it, whether Cardinal Francis was with it or not. We and Obama should think of Wright and Pleger as shots at the doc's office - no one wants to get a shot but after it's done the pain and swelling goes away and then you're glad you have that immunization for 4 years and it's all good. God bless.
