Man you are killing me! Ill do a video. U know I hate Lent! Not really hate it. I love to forget that its coming up and do nothing. U have taken away my excuse. Jerk!
ok, so, i had a lifestyle plan, a remake rebuild restore, a process.
and thanks to your stanky video, if you can give up sports ((ill pray you through that, no march madness? yikes!)) and seafood ((youre officially crazy for that)) ill give up my one "necessity" that is not a necessity at all ... the wonderful book of faces, (rip facebook, see you april 12th)
The hype music is much appreciated J... I really enjoyed it... now, for me, I'm giving up cursing. It's funny because I don't curse around adults (98% of them), but when I am with friends, I resort to it outta comfort and for expression... man this is going to be a tuff 46 days, but it is something I've been wanting to control better for a while now.
...what if I'm reading something in my head and it's a curse word... or what if I think it but dont say it... does that count?? lol
Alright, let's see. ESPN wouldn't hurt me at all seeing as how I don't even own a TV. I don't eat fried foods much, so that's out as well (as is Pop for the same reason (yes, POP, not 'soda')). So, after thinking long and hard here's what I came up with...
GADGETS!!! Grant is a gadget-king! So, I cannot get anything else for my computer (unless it breaks 'cause I do need it for school), iPod, nor can I step foot into an Apple store, not even to "just look around."
On top of all that, (and this one is really huge for me ya'll) I have to keep the same cell phone for lent. That may sound dumb, but those that know me know I have a different cell phone every chance I get! I gotta continue the process I started earlier this year of not being so wrapped up in my material junk, thus a material centered challenge.
On the food front, pizza. So, I'll be giving away my freezer full of hot pockets!
Well, I've decided (drum roll and what not) to give up fried food too, all beverages other than tea, OJ, and water, fast food, and T.V. before 8 p.m. (I do all my grad assistant work at home during the day). This is my first time doing Lent so ya'll pray for me.
Alright J....Im taking this Lent Challenge on two fold, the sacrifice- cause God is worth it, then making some additions to make me a better person. Wow, this is major for me but here it is.....NO MUSIC FOR 46 DAYS! OUCH! (I'll be dreaming Stevie Wonder and some jazz songs before it's all over) I'm looking to replace the music with a song in my heart from God :) Then, no fried foods (LOVE chicken wings big time and snacks like chips or crackers) Then I'm adding things I hope to continue forever... 1/2 hour of exercise every day (thats a tough one because I'm beat down EVERY DAY when I get home), and last but not least I like the idea of prayer 5 times a day (because through it all I want an ultimate connection with God).
It's awesome to read about how you and "the crew" are taking on The Lent Challenge. May God bless each of you richly in your time of sacrifice.
Love the video! My favorite part is when you mentioned the honey buns you put in the microwave for 10 seconds, I know exactly what you're talking about. Lol. But I'm giving up shopping for clothing (my PT job is in retail so it's definitely going to be a challenge) and I've decided to also give up fast food. Good luck!
Mama D...you've taken this thing to the next level...I will be by there with the camera to check on your progress (you'll probably be in the corner scratching yourself :)
Show up folks
"I want to hear a song in my heart from God" MY GOODNESS. I'm floored over here
I love this! I consider my approach to Lent this year to be pretty--for lack of a better phrase--balls to the wall. But it's all for the glory of God and to get myself right in his eyes. So here's the rundown: My church does a corporate fast which involves food, no fried foods, no fast food, no junk food, sweet, red meat or sea scavengers and limited dairy. On my own I am giving up Facebook and non-essential shopping--meaning I will only spend money on bills and groceries.
Some may think it extreme, as a colleague put it, I am giving up enough for two people, but the way I see it, I couldn't give up enough for God. I would just as soon as retire my life in this sector of the world and pick up the monastic way of life, but God hasn't called to that yet. Nevertheless, I pray everyone has an awesome Lent and really taps into God. Grace and Peace.
WoW. So this is the first time I've wandered to your actual website and what do I see? The Lent challenge. This will be my first time observing Lent and I'm doing it b/c my friend asked me to tag along - so I'm not going to talk about people (which needs to be a lifestyle change anyway). But your video and explanation were inspiring so I feel I need to do more. I'm giving up gchat and FB (Lord help me). -P. Danielle
Okay... after some deliberation and a serious conversation with the wife, I've decided to reevaluate my sacrifices, as they now seem quite trivial to me. So, I'm going all in and giving up meat for Lent, no flesh of any kind. No seafood, beef, pork, chicken, lamb, goat, fish, etc. Okay, I will definitely be supplementing my protein, but I will need everyone's prayers FOR REAL because this is going to be the most difficult thing I've ever done. I can't remember the last time I went on day without meat, so 46 is going to be astronomically difficult. I will be standing on one of my favorite scriptures for sure, Luke 1:37.
Listen team, after Day One of this, I finished 3 songs.
Pushing ourselves is the key. Not trying to kill yourself, but knowing what you can and cannot do, and leaning on those limits a bit. It's fun after'while
In previous years I have given up things like cursing and alcohol. And every year I have been successful. Thanks to your challenge (and no I am not being facetious), I have taken it up a notch. As with my usually, I am going to give up fried foods, pop and random snacking. But this year, I am taking it further than I ever have before. This year I have given up (wait for it...wait for it...) SHOPPING!!!
This is going to be particularly hard because I LOVE to shop. For me, other folks, it doesn't matter. Chances are if it's on sell I am going to make a purchase. So besides necessities, I can't make any other purchases. This really hurts because I just discovered the Aldo Liquidation Store...
Folks are going all the way in this year. I can't wait to see how much enlightenment comes to all of us.
It's not that you're blessed more because you do it, it's that by REMOVING the things we LOVE (or think we love) we find our true selves and hear from the Universe in some interesting ways. Epiphany becomes immanent in the absence of self. There remains God, and in God one can only be blessed.
Here it goes...(wow, my heart is beating really fast, this is serious business)
1)~NO PROFESSIONAL SPA SERVICES~ Including but not limited to: pedicures, massages, body scrubs, facials, eye brow shaping, full sets, fill ins or manicures.
**I go the spa and or nail place AT LEAST once a week. Its where I relax and its where me and my girls get together. Aside from church its where I cope...this is MAJOR! But for real I need to learn to relax and chill more with Jesus. Time spent at the spa could be extra time spent in the word.**
1a) And I'm gonna go over bank statements from the last month and the amount of $$ spent at the spa will be the same amount added to my regular church offering. (did I just type that??)
2)~NO FRIED FOODS~ J, I'm gonna roll with you on that one...for me the big thing is that this includes tortilla chips. If I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life it would be tortilla chips and salsa, no joke.
And to round it out...
3)~MARCH 21 - APRIL 11 DANIEL FAST~
I started to delete that last one cause I have never done a Daniel fast for that long before. I was thinking maybe thats is a little "extra." But getting beat, bruised, battered, going to cross and dying for my messed up self was beyond extra...
As I thought, I'm really missing some music in my life about now. Not in the corner scratching myself yet J :) but by day 46 who knows because I am a sho nuff music lover (as you know). And, since I've given up fried foods too, seems like everytme I pass a Sharks chicken & fish or a KFC the smell of chicken wings just lights up the car and makes my stomach start to talking. That's the way it goes when you are striving to get closer...the walk is not easy but soooo worth it. Hang in there everyone, espeically the first timers commiting to the Lent Challenge. He died for us so this is nothing in comparison. We Thank You Father!
I almost gave up Wednesday. I talked to one of my favorite cousins on the phone and she was updating me on a few things... she was cussing up a storm (she doesnt know about my lent challenge). Her story was funny and precise and it was her perfect use of curse words that made it all possible. So why not just give up as long as I use curse words properly (lol!) Nah, I'm not giving up... I love a challenge. Plus, this will just give me the discipline I need to control what I say and learn of to express myself better (bc I definitely need that!)
On a second thought, I wish that petty chicks would have given up their pettiness for lent (more like forever). Stop trying to "attack" other ppl with your pettiness and move on with your life. That is all..
I giving up McDonald...anyone who knows me how much I love McD's! And there's one right next to my dorm but I have survived. Living a healthy life is a life that God wants me to live. I need to love myself and God a little more this lent season.
Well your aunt is giving up french fries especially from Harold's chicken with BBQ sauce or with cheese from Portillo's. And I'm giving up speaking negatively.

Man...I gave up my ultimate favorite again, chocolate! As a matter of fact im extending my lent for 60 days!

Well J I'm going to give up Dunkin Donuts for lent. Your little cousin and believe me I eat 2 to 3 times a week.
